The synagogue was built in the first half of the 17th century. It consists of the higher prayer hall and two lower halls – the, so called, bevies for women. The vault and the walls are ornamented with stucco-works representing the Lublin Renaissance. Inside the synagogue there is an altar closet (aron ha-kodesz), which was used to store the Torah scrolls. The building is surmounted with a Renaissance attic.
The synagogue was devastated during the Second World War. The renovation works conducted after the war encompassed, among others the reconstruction of the southern bevy, attic and the reparation of the roof.
Currently, the building houses a modern cultural Centre "The Synagogue" as well as the office of tourist and cultural information of the "Hasidic Route" and also the Multimedia Museum of the History of the Jews of Zamość and the Surrounding Area. The synagogue still fulfills its religious functions.
