The city was founded in the XVI century by Crown Hetman Jan Zamoyski. Designed by an eminent Italian architect Bernardo Morando, the city-fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 as an architectural and urban complex.

The visitors are delighted by the magnificent rectangular Renaissance market square with its beautiful Armenian tenement houses and the town hall decorated with extensive classicist stairs. Zamość is constantly expanding its offer for visitors by using historic buildings to create new cultural institutions, museums and attractions. The most interesting realization seems to be the Arsenal Museum of of Fortifications and Weaponry located in the reconstructed Bastion VII. The youngest are eager to visit the zoo and attractions located in the city park.

The city emphasizes the importance of history and encourages the arrival of all those interested in reconstructions: the Zamość Fortress Siege and the Legend of the Swedish Table, as well as the Hetman Fair which refers to tradition.

The city has rich musical traditions that are cultivated by the Karol Namysłowski's Symphonic Orchestra - the oldest continuously functioning orchestra in Poland.
