The East of Poland Cycling Trail Green Velo, with length of nearly 2000 km, is the longest cycling route in Poland. It runs through five voivodeships in the eastern part of the country, including Lublin region (circa 351 km).
The part of the trail that runs through Lublin Region, leads through, among other places, the scenic areas of the Bug River with shrines of different denominations: in Kostomłoty, Kodeń and Jabłeczna, multicultural cities: Chełm and Włodawa, as well as the Roztocze National Park.
The trail connects the following villages in Lubelskie Voivodeship: Janów Podlaski - Kostomłoty - Kodeń - Jabłeczna - Sławatycze - Włodawa - Wola Uhruska - Chełm - Krasnystaw - Szczebrzeszyn - Zwierzyniec - Roztoczański Park Narodowy - Józefów - Susiec
Cultural heritage
The Lublin's part of Green Velo East Cycle Trail is a unique “multicultural festival”. The areas surrounding the Bug River in the Lublin region reveal true gems: an Orthodox monastery in Jabłeczna, which is picturesquely situated right by the Bug River, the world’s only Neo-Uniate parish of Byzantine-Slavonic rite under the name of St. Nikita in Kostomłoty, or the magnificent Marian Sanctuary in Kodeń. And finally, three extraordinary multicultural cities – Włodawa, Chełm and Szczebrzeszyn. For centuries the flavour of social life was seasoned in Polish, Jewish and Rusyn styles. The multicultural picture of the trail in Lublin is completed by Armenian tenement houses in Zamość and a Tatar Mizar (cemetery) in Zastawek.
Natural heritage
The trail leads towards the Bug River, which is majestically meandering through the green landscapes of the Lublin Region. It's here, in the place where the river is a natural border with Ukraine and Belarus, where the cyclists cover over a half of the 363-km route. A peculiarity of the Sobibór Forests, spreading between Włodawa and Chełm, are the biggest in Poland breeding grounds of the pond turtle, a species endangered in Europe. Then the trail leads to Roztocze, where the cyclists are welcomed by the Polish Koniks, the descendants of the tarpan. This is where we can see the picturesque little waterfalls on the small Tanew River.
Infrastructure
One of the factors that make the "East of Poland Cycling Trail Green Velo" so special is the leisure infrastructure located along the trail. It includes Cyclist Service Places (abbreviated as MOR). Along the trail, from Elbląg to Końskie, there are around 230 of them. They're located every 8-10 kilometers, typically in the proximity of tourist attractions and interesting places. All MORs are similarly marked and equipped with sheds, benches, bicycle stands, informative boards, and bins, some of them offer portable toilets and water tanks. MORs provide a place to rest, shelter from the rain, and information about the tourist attractions in the nearest area. Using MORs is free of charge.
