Picturesquely located by the Uherka River near the Ukrainian border, Chełm is famous for the unique in Europe chalk tunnels. The labyrinth of corridors winding under the city was the result of chalk excavation from the 16th to the early 20th century. The underground route has been made available to visitors, and became a unique tourist attraction and permanent place of residence of Bieluch the Ghost.
The oldest monuments of Chełm, located on the hill known as Chełm Hill, are: the remains of an early-medieval ducal settlement and a former Uniate cathedral complex from the 18th century. Fans of architecture and art will definitely be interested in the baroque church of the Dispersion of the Apostles by famous architect Paweł Fontana, the Orthodox church of St. John the Theologian, the modernist housing estate "Dyrekcja", and the rich collections of the Museum of the Chełm Land. The museum owns about 20 thousands of exhibits related to art and the history of Chełm. Their presentation is being handled by individual specialized departments: Archeology, History, Ethnography, Nature, Education, Art of the Chełm Land, Contemporary Art and Gallery 72, Old Photography, Archives, and the Library.
