This ideal Renaissance city was designed by the Italian architect Bernardo Morando on behalf of the crown Hetman Jan Zamoyski in the second half of the 16th century. The Great Market Square is the heart of Zamość. It is 10,000 square metres in total, and contains a majestic town hall and arcaded tenement houses. The Old Town has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The most interesting monuments are: the cathedral, the Zamość Academy building, the synagogue, and the fragments of old fortifications, including the Rotunda - currently the seat of the Martyrdom Museum. The zoo is also one of the city’s bigger attractions.
